RIM Needs to Bounce Back in 2012

With continued declining sales, Research in Motion (RIM), needs to quickly figure out how they will compete in one of the fastest changing industries today. Known for their expertise in business management tools and features, RIM continues to find themselves struggling for a piece of the device market.

In their latest release, RIM introduces Blackberry Mobile Conferencing 2.0, an enhancement upon their previous mobile conferencing software. The free app includes enhancements such as the ability to automatically turn an email thread into a conference call using the user's conference bridge details. It automates tedious and error prone tasks associated with conference calling such as dialing into a conference call that includes multiple main numbers, and conference ID among other codes. The 2.0 software includes a "Join Now" prompt that wil automatically dial in as well as quickly reconnect should there be a disconnect.

"Blackberry Mobile Conferencing is an essential app for anyone who sets up or joins conference calls," said Tom Goguen, vice president, collaboration and social networking at RIM. "This latest version of Blackberry Mobile Conferencing includes a number of enhancements such as the ability to turn any email thread into a conference call automatically, making it even easier for Blackberry users to get things done."

The new features that are included in Blackberry Mobile Conferencing 2.0 are:

  • Turn an Email Thread into a Conference Call: With a few clicks, all parties within an email thread are automatically included in the conference invite.
  • Automatic Detection of Conference Call Details: Conference call information found in a meeting invite on the calendar is automatically stored with the dial in information.
  • Conference Call ID: Users can easily keep track of the conference calls they've participated in. When calls are completed, the conference calls are stored in the call log.
  • Conference Profiles Increased to a 10: Users can add preset conference call details to almost any meeting they schedule by selecting from up to ten stored profiles.
  • Private Moderator Codes: Invites that are sent using a preset conference profile include just the information that participants need to join the call.

It's hard to dispute the advancements of RIM that greatly enhance the efficiency of the business world, yet in moving forward, more innovations need to rapidly take place in order for them to start rising against their competition.

SPAMfighter Reveals Pricing for Windows Server Anti-Virus Software

Microsoft Gold Partner SPAMfighter ApS has set an aggressive limited-time pricing for its VIRUSfighter Server anti-virus software as they aim to have the lowest price on the market for any anti-virus software made for Windows servers. An easy-to-use software, VIRUSfighter protects against malware including viruses, trojans and root kits while securing critical data for any company. The Virus Bulletin awarded VIRUSfighter with a VB100 award in comparative tests.

While pricing for one license for a Windows server from other vendors are typically $150-200 with less expensive software that leaves out necessary features, VIRUSfighter is offering a 90% discount off of its $199 price to $19.95 until March 31, 2012.

Henrik Sorensen, SPAMfighter ApS CEO, said, "In this current economic climate, many companies are struggling. We think this aggressive pricing sends a signal to the market; we want to help companies still be able to secure their critical data against potentially devastating malware threats. We are pleased to be able to provide such a competitive and highly-praised product at an unbeatable price."

LifeShield Security Debuts Free LifeView App for Android Tablets, Smartphones and the Apple iPhone

LifeShield Security extends the availability of its free LifeView app beyond the Apple iPad, to include Android tablets and smartphones, as well as the Apple iPhone, so customers can fully manage their LifeShield home security system from their preferred mobile device.

LifeView's new sleek and sophisticated portal enables total interactivity with the LifeShield home security system through a simple interface with cool graphics and instinctual navigation that allows users of all ages to easily manage their home security system from their iPad, iPhone, Android tablet or Android smartphone.

"Smartphones and tablets have become increasingly popular among consumers who enjoy the obvious benefits to managing the details of life on the go. Our enhanced application opens the door for iPhone, tablet and smartphone users to fully control their LifeShield system from their portable or handheld device," said Lou Stilp, Founder and COO, LifeShield Security. "This is the same app we recently announced to the Apple iPad community - so it delivers the same superior user interface that attaches to the customer and not their house. There is no other home security company that offers as many functions in a single application as the LifeView app."

Customers can download the LifeView app for the iPad and iPhone from the Apple App Store. Android tablet and smartphone versions can be found through Android Market.

Within the LifeView app, users manage their system via the Console Tab that's color-coded, easy to read and shows the status of every sensor and device for the entire system - whether a window is up or a door is open - and users can view the 20 most recent events instantly. If a user has cameras installed, the LifeView app will also take snapshots when the app is launched so the user can instantly view current images from every camera installed throughout the home.

LifeView's user interface also allows customers to log in to access every LifeShield system setting. In addition to the Console Tab, users can access the Camera Tab for all pictures and videos, as well as the ability to view live video, and the History Tab to scan the last 90 days of history.

Users can also arm the system with one touch and quickly disarm the system via user code, create new event notifications and camera triggers, and add or remove users any time.

On Demand Technologies Releases New App for iPad

On Demand Technologies has released an app for the iPad that enables sales representatives to create custom documents and presentations with just a few screen taps.

The app seamlessly accesses information in a corporate datastore to dynamically create client-specific content. In addition, the data-driven content is created in real time, meaning that documents are always up-to-date. The app handles the presentation of content automatically, and does not use or require the installation of KeyNote, PowerPoint, or any other app to function.

The solution was successfully rolled out for use by a Fortune 100 company over the past weeks and will be used nationally among thousands of sales representatives.

"We are extremely excited to not only release this product, but to have it being used by one of the largest companies in the world," said Tom VanGoethem, president and Chief Executive and Operations Officer at ODT. "We have been specializing in dynamic document creation for over sixteen years, and the iPad is a natural extension of our capabilities."

A tablet-based strategy is gaining momentum as companies look to put actionable information in the hands of sales people at the point of decision making. It is also a valuable "green" strategy in terms of being environmentally friendly and saving money due to less paper printing.

"We wanted to exploit the capabilities of the iPad - instant on, the intuitive interface, and wireless connectivity - things that make it head and shoulders better than booting up a laptop in a sales situation," said Philip Allen, ODT's Chief Technology and Marketing Officer. "Ease of use is the key while delivering timely, relevant, and compelling content at the same time."

In 2012 ODT plans to roll the app out to a variety of industries, including insurance, financial services, advertising solutions, and medical sales as companies migrate to a tablet-based strategy.

Benchmark Electronics' Thailand Facility Reopens Ahead of Schedule

Benchmark Electronics' Ayudhaya, Thailand facility has restarted operations a week ahead of their planned schedule. The factory, located in the Hi-Tech Industrial Estate in Ayudhaya, sustained damage to its buildings and equipment as a result of floodwaters breaching the levee protecting the industrial park, and the Company ceased production at the factory in October until the floodwaters receded and operational safety could be confirmed.

Benchmark's factory was the first to reopen in the Hi-Tech Industrial Estate. This rapid recovery was made possible because of the effectiveness of the Company's Emergency Management Business Continuity Plan. Going forward, the Company will continue operations in both Ayudhaya and its recently restarted Korat facility.

"It's remarkable that this facility could be up and running and producing product for our customers a week ahead of our aggressive schedule. It is a testament to the quality of our employees and to all the Thailand people," said Cary T. Fu, Chief Executive Officer. "Also and very importantly, the Thai government has vowed to invest in new infrastructure to ensure that such a disaster will not be repeated, including the creation of new floodways to more efficiently channel water through the central region and Chao Phraya river basin to the Gulf of Thailand, and increasing the levee system around the Hi Tech Industrial Park to a level exceeding the 100 year flood plan which is well in excess of the flood levels recently experienced."

PBS KIDS Expands Video App to iPhone & iPod touch, Offering More Free Educational Video Content on Mobile than Any Other Kids Media Brand

PBS KidsThe PBS KIDS Video App is now available on iPhone and iPod touch, bringing more free educational video content to families than any other children’s media app. The app gives families free, streaming access to more than 2,000 videos – including clips and full episodes – from their favorite PBS KIDS series. The PBS KIDS Video App launched on iPad in May with great success; it has served more than 430 million video streams – an average of two million per day – and has had over 450,000 downloads to date.

“PBS KIDS video has been incredibly successful online, making PBSKIDS.org the number one kids entertainment site for free streamed videos,” said Jason Seiken, Senior Vice President, Interactive, PBS. “When we launched the PBS KIDS Video iPad app in May, it was equally well-received, with 50 million streams just in the first month and growing to more than 86 million streams in November. And kids watch more video streams on the PBS KIDS Video iPad app than on nearly all other children’s broadcast and cable network websites. After seeing this high demand for our children’s programming on the iPad we were committed to extending the app’s reach to the iPhone and iPod touch, which will bring our popular content to even more kids and parents.”

Demand for high-quality, educational apps continues to rise, particularly as families plan to bring their mobile devices with them during holiday travel. In a recent survey conducted by PBS, parents ranked educational value as one of the top reasons for purchase (74 percent) when choosing apps for smart phones.

“We know that parents are seeking apps for their children that are both fun and educational, and the PBS KIDS Video App is an ideal combination of both, featuring characters from kids’ favorite PBS KIDS series, with clips and full episodes that are built to support core curricular areas like science and literacy,” said Lesli Rotenberg, Senior Vice President, Children’s Media, PBS. “At PBS, our mission is to reach all children with the best educational content across all platforms. On television and online, there is no other media entity that offers as many educational programs as PBS KIDS. And now for the first time this content is available on the iPhone and iPod touch, which we know are incredibly popular with families, opening up worlds of possibilities for even more children.”

The app includes clips and full episodes from PBS KIDS series like THE CAT IN THE HAT KNOWS A LOT ABOUT THAT!, DINOSAUR TRAIN, CURIOUS GEORGE, SUPER WHY, SESAME STREET, WORDGIRL and WILD KRATTS.

The PBS KIDS Video App also features helpful tools for parents such as:

  • Access to local PBS station TV schedules
  • Additional information about TV series, including intended age and learning goals
  • The ability to download related educational apps and TV episodes directly from the App Store and iTunes
  • Marking series as “favorites”
  • Sharing videos via email, Facebook and Twitter

The PBS KIDS Video App is available for free from the App Store..

The PBS KIDS Video App joins PBS KIDS’ suite of apps, which help kids practice key skills such as literacy, science and math. “We continue to offer fans more content via mobile, and parents are really responding. Our fourteen educational apps for kids have seen more than 1.5 million downloads to date,” continued Seiken. “PBS is continually developing content across a variety of platforms and experimenting with cutting-edge technologies like augmented reality and 3-D gaming to help increase learning for kids.”

Global Electronics Giant Catering to African Technology Needs

The growth experienced by Samsung Africa has been nothing short of phenomenal. The statistic which represents this best is the sharp surge in the number of employees. In just one year, staff numbers have doubled to over 1,000, which includes 650 full time workers, field representatives and marketers.

"It comes as a result of the growth and progressive steps we have taken - being committed to the whole of Africa," states George Ferreira, Chief Operating Officer (COO) for Samsung Africa.

The region's head office is situated in Sandton, Johannesburg, with the South Africa offices based in the building next door. Ferreira states that Samsung is the first consumer electronics company to base its African headquarters actually in the continent, reiterating the South Korean company's slogan 'Built for Africa'.

Samsung has placed great focus on its 'Built for Africa' initiative. This involves looking at global products and adapting them to best suit African conditions. The company's first solar powered netbook was released in Africa, as were 'surge safe' televisions which can handle fluctuations of power without having their performance effected, and which can operate on minimal energy.

MyFlare(TM) Debuts as First Automated Multi-Functional Personal Safety App for Smartphones

MyFlare(TM) cleverly employs the essential resources on a smartphone to provide users additional personal safety and faster emergency response. MyFlare(TM) is the first automated multi-functional personal safety app in which one button calls 911 or a non-emergency number, while simultaneously alerting the users' family, friends and emergency contacts that they're in trouble; providing their GPS location; blasting a police siren; and even including a video recording of their present environment.

What makes MyFlare(TM) unique is that it not only utilizes telephone, SMS text messaging, e-mail, GPS, audio and video to create and continuously deliver an emergency distress message, but all of its resources execute automatically upon pushing just one button within the app. MyFlare(TM) allows users to utilize their smartphone's resources collectively in ways that are humanly impossible to do on their own (for example, automatically delivering multiple messages to different people simultaneously). MyFlare(TM)'s functionality is simple and simultaneous -- critical in a potentially life-threatening situation.

According to a recent USA Today study encompassing the 50 biggest U.S. cities, more than 1,000 savable lives are lost each year because of inefficiencies in emergency medical response times. The National Crime Victimization Survey reported in 2006 that 232,960 women in the U.S. were raped or sexually assaulted, which equated to more than 600 women every day. Furthermore, the Stalking Resource Center has found that 1,006,970 women are stalked annually in the U.S., and one in 12 women will be stalked in her lifetime. In addition, the Kids Fighting Chance organization reveals that one child is reported missing or abducted every 40 minutes, which translates to approximately 2,000 reports per day and 800,000 reports per year.

These examples of statistics prove there is a major need for an additional -- and personal -- layer of protection in the event of an emergency. With MyFlare(TM), that time has finally come. Funded and designed by co-founders Barry Haimo and David Kahn, and developed by iPowerFour, a multinational software development company with an 18-year proven track record, MyFlare(TM) acts as a personalized digital flare gun by cleverly utilizing smartphone technology to minimize one's risk of danger. In the event of an emergency, MyFlare(TM) performs ALL of the following actions automatically, simultaneously and continuously in order to give users the help they need when they need it most:

- Calls 911 or the user's designated non-911 emergency contact
- Sends a customized MyFlare Message(TM) via SMS text message and e-mail to 10 of the user's pre-selected MyFlare Contacts(TM), alerting them that the user's in trouble (the message includes the user's current GPS location)
- Sends 20-second optional video recordings capturing the user's present environment, which are attached to the delivered e-mails every few minutes (as determined by the user)
- Blasts an optional police siren continuously, except when the phone is not in use

Most importantly, the MyFlare Message(TM) is delivered to the user's MyFlare Contacts(TM) every three minutes with the user's updated GPS location. This may prove to be helpful as evidence in legal proceedings or in the event that the user is fleeing an emergency situation, or worse, abducted. David Kahn, CFO of MyFlare(TM), remarked, "We wanted to create a mobile phone app that will make a difference to a lot of people. The statistics we found were frightening and moving forward with the development of this idea was a no-brainer." CEO Barry Haimo added, "Unfortunately, there is often insufficient time in an emergency to communicate with 911, and only some 911 dispatchers will investigate scenarios where 911 is called but the victim cannot communicate. MyFlare(TM) gives smartphone users the peace of mind knowing that there is additional reassurance in all emergencies."

ClearSync Launches New Calendar Android Phone App

Managing calendars and contacts for businesses and families has been made easier with the introduction of ClearSync 's calendar app for Android smartphones and tablets. The interconnected and user-friendly software synchronizes with the leading desktop calendar programs offered by Google and Microsoft , so that a user always knows the schedules of the important people in their life. ClearSync allows a user to share multiple calendars and contact lists with anyone, anywhere and at any time.

Introduced by Tanner Research, a leader in microelectronic design solutions, ClearSync's app is now available for download in the Android market and makes calendar sharing simple. "ClearSync has the most flexible calendar sharing model in the mobile calendaring space," says John Tanner, chief executive officer of both ClearSync and Tanner Research. "There is nothing in the app world that handles multiple-calendar events the way ClearSync does. ClearSync allows users to share across multiple Outlook, Google and ClearSync calendars, and a change anywhere is propagated everywhere."

The ClearSync calendar app is ideal for busy individuals, families, small businesses and organizations, medium-sized businesses and even departments within larger businesses and organizations. The program allows users to juggle all aspects of life including professional, social, church, charity work, school and children's activities via its unlimited color-coded calendars and contacts categories.

The ClearSync app offers five levels of service:

-Free: Ideal for simple sharing, offers one sharing group, two members of groups, sync with Google, forum tech support and a free trial for sync with Microsoft Outlook. This app is supported by occasional advertising popups.
-Individual: Allows greater sharing with four people and everything included in the free application. This app sells for $4.99 and has no advertising.
-Outlook: Ideal for someone who wants simply to connect their Outlook Calendar data to their phone. Includes all the features of the Individual App, plus allows the user to sync with an unlimited number of Outlook calendars and installations for $9.95/year.
-Silver: Ideal for families, small organizations and offices, offers unlimited sharing groups and members of groups, email tech support, text messaging, and sync with Google and Microsoft Outlook for $19.95/year.
-Gold: Ideal for power users, midsize companies and professionals, offers encrypted communications, unlimited sharing groups, members of groups, phone technical support, text messaging, sync with Google and Microsoft Outlook for $59.95/year.

Advantages of having ClearSync on an Android-based phone include:

-Keep contact information and calendar data safe. Because ClearSync's data is "mirrored in the cloud," the information is stored via the web. If users accidentally drop their phone into the pool, the calendar and contacts are protected
-Make appointments quickly with the integrated contacts manager that creates events with contact data preloaded
-Synchronize ClearSync calendars and contacts on your PC and/or laptop
-Link or embed calendars to websites
-Publish a web widget for calendar events to keep a group's website up-to-date automatically

"One of the primary values of ClearSync is the ability to easily manage and share multiple calendars and sets of contacts," said Tanner. "Years of honing the software have made it a powerful and easy-to-use app for an Android smartphone." ClearSync software also runs on Windows, Macintosh and Linux PCs and in most web browsers, so users are able to enter information at their desks that, moments later, can be viewed on their phones through the cloud-based sync. ClearSync can also provide the link between Outlook calendars on different machines that are not connected via Microsoft Exchange.

In conjunction with the launch of the calendar app, ClearSync announces the "Win a Motorola Zoom" sweepstakes, giving Facebook fans the chance to win a Motorola Zoom, a Samsung Galaxy and other prizes. Starting Nov. 1, consumers are able to enter for a chance to win a Motorola Zoom by "liking" the ClearSync Facebook page and filling out the basic entry form.

ClearSync's app is available for all Android (Google) phones v.2.2 and higher, including the HTC Amaze and the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic. It also works on tablets running Android 3.0 and higher, such as the Motorola XOOM . Android users can download the free ClearSync app by going to http://www.clearsync.com/home/android or by visiting the Android Market on their smartphone and searching for ClearSync. While the ClearSync phone app currently only works on the Android platform, ClearSync calendars can be viewed in any standard, contemporary, phone browsers including iPhone, BlackBerry, and Windows 7 and 8.

Mo-DV Offers Fast, Secure, Economical Cross-Platform Solution to Delivering Multimedia Content Globally to Mobile Devices

Mo-DV (Mobile Digital Video), an innovator of multimedia content delivery via USB Flash Drives and Micro SD Cards, has developed a game changing new technology that solves the format problems between mobile devices, HDTV sets, and other consumer electronic devices, with issued patents. The new medium enables users to play content on cell phones, tablets, PCs, and HDTVs. The Mo-DV technology and patents also apply to rapid Kiosk content delivery in addition to pre-loaded or downloaded content.

"The consumer market for movies on smartphones, tablets, PCs, and smart TVs is now looking for help from Mo-DV," commented Jessica Fullmer, CEO of Mo-DV. "Our new common media enables these users to play content on their mobile devices. Mo-DV provides secure and economical multimedia content delivery universally for all devices via SD Micro Cards and USB Flash Drives. I like to refer to this new form of content delivery as our triple A: Any device, Any place, Anytime."

Optical discs cannot play on mobile phones, notebooks or tablets, and on fewer and fewer PCs. Mo-DV's technology centers on the premise that one flash-memory device plays on all platforms. The company's cross-platform common media technology brings movies, music videos, and promotional video content to the billions of memory-card-capable mobile phones, tablets, and PCs that are in use today.

The technology automatically orients and sizes content to fit different screen sizes and shapes, ranging from low to full high-resolution HD. It incorporates Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology, protecting content from being illegally copied.

Although streaming TV to the living room is convenient, it is much more expensive to wirelessly stream or download from carriers to cell phones or mobile devices. Fiber optic-based wired networks are far less costly for data transmission than delivery by wireless networks. This makes movies and other content delivered on flash memory media less expensive than streaming or downloading over networks. Most portable devices are compatible with flash media, unlike optical discs, none of which are compatible with cell phones, tablets, or notebooks.

Mo-DV's patented common media technology allows playback of movie content on all platforms regardless of operating environment. Its software-based copy protection is an unbroken anti-copy solution for delivering movies stored on flash memory devices. Movie delivery through flash memory devices solves the problem of the lack of wireless bandwidth needed for streaming and downloading.

Currently, two-thirds of the world's phones have memory card slots. In 2011, more than four billion devices have memory card slots or USB flash-drive ports from which movies can be loaded. The original concept for Blu-Ray was for it to be able to download content to any device. However, Blu-ray movie storage is 20GB, which is not practical to download, particularly to mobile devices.

A recent poll shows that 48 percent of smartphone owners watch video on their smartphones. This movie-watching segment is projected to grow immensely. Also increasing is the length of the video view on smartphones. A recent study shows half of all tablet owners watched TV shows or movies on their tablets.

As all computing is moving to mobile devices, the restrictions on data capacities from limited RF spectrum and other elements will inhibit not only video transmissions but also use of "Cloud" services access due to those same limits.

Anton/Bauer Introduces New Gold Mount Solutions for Industry's Top Cameras

Anton BauerAnton/Bauer®, a brand of The Vitec Group, and the world’s premier provider of batteries, chargers, lighting and other mobile power systems for the professional broadcast, video and film industries, will demonstrate the infinite capabilities of its advanced Gold Mount® System for some of the industry’s top cameras from such manufacturers as ARRI, Canon, Panasonic and Sony at the 2011 NAB Show in Las Vegas (Booth C7032).

At NAB, Anton/Bauer will introduce many new Gold Mount options, including the QR-HotSwap-AR for the ARRI ALEXA digital camera system, the QR-Locaster for the ARRI Locaster light, the QRC-DUAL-PT for the Sony PMW-F3 camera, the QR-C80P for the Panasonic AG-HMC80 professional AVCCAM HD shoulder-mount camcorder and the QRC-VBG for the Panasonic AG-AF100 series professional HD camera.

“When shooting on location, the last thing Anton/Bauer Gold Mount users will have to worry about is a power failure because of a bad battery connection,” says Shin Minowa, vice president of marketing and business development. “The key to our success and foundation of all of our technology begins with the Gold Mount System. During this year’s NAB we will showcase our many new and existing Gold Mount solutions, the most secure mounting system available for professionals.”

Providing a secure snap-on approach to keep the battery in place from any position, the Gold Mount® is the basis of Anton/Bauer’s power systems. The Gold Mount provides an interchangeable battery system using a forward compatible approach originally developed by Anton/Bauer.  This system allows for new cell chemistries as they are developed, allowing a battery introduced today to perform seamlessly on a current charger purchased 10 years ago, with only a simple firmware upgrade. Paramount to the Gold Mount’s performance are three solid mechanical connections that “lock” into place, providing secure contact for a steady stream of uninterrupted power, an inherent problem with other mounts causing users to experience intermittent power failure.

Engineered from durable high-impact polymer, the Gold Mount employs self-cleaning gold-plated pins rated for high-current, allowing them to withstand the power required for today’s cameras. Other features of the Gold Mount include InterActive® Viewfinder Fuel Gauge which allows for communication directly to the camera’s viewfinder. Providing power requirements ranging from 7.2v to 28v, the Anton/Bauer Gold Mount System is the most widely used battery mounting system in the industry and is available as factory standard equipment on many cameras from manufacturers such as Grass Valley, Hitachi, Ikegami, JVC and Canon.

Additionally, Anton/Bauer is now offering new Gold Mount power solutions for the Canon EOS 5D Mark II, EOS 7D and EOS 60D Digital SLR cameras with the QR-DSLR. This solution addresses the needs of broadcasters and filmmakers incorporating Digital SLR camera video capture into their productions. The QR-DSLR runs monitors, lights, transmitters and other accessories not possible with a standard OEM battery, utilizes the Logic Series® batteries and has the ability to mount to most third-party support rigs, such as Red-Rock Micro, Zacuto, Genus and Cinevate. It can also be configured in a pouch pack which is worn on a belt when handheld production is necessary.

ABOUT ANTON/BAUER®

Auralex Debuts at NAB with Full Line of Acoustical Products

Auralex® Acoustics, Inc., the industry leader in innovative sound control solutions, is making its debut into the broadcast market at the 2011 NAB Show with a full line of acoustical products catered to a range of broadcast spaces such as production facilities, control rooms and voiceover booths.  Auralex will showcase its best-selling lines of Studiofoam®, Studiofoam®Pro and ProPanel™ product lines, which were previously marketed to the pro audio and music industry markets.

“We are thrilled to be exhibiting at the 2011 NAB Show,” says Eric Smith, founder and president of Auralex Acoustics. “We have seen an influx of interest from the broadcast market for our acoustical products and thought that this year was the ideal time to showcase our commitment to this market by exhibiting at the show.  Our products are beneficial to any space that needs acoustical fine tuning. Broadcast facilities can now benefit from years of acoustical expertise that was once reserved for music recording studios.”

Auralex’s expertise is not only found in the innovative products it offers, but also in the free, off-site acoustical analysis services that help end-users solve acoustical anomalies in each space. Auralex’s team of experts has a wide-range of experience in helping end-users treat their unique spaces such as control rooms, broadcast facilities, vocal booths, home theaters, houses of worship and gymnasiums.

To utilize this service, download the FREE Personalized Room Analysis Form that best suits your space (i.e. standard, large room and home theater), fill out the form on the Auralex website (www.auralex.com) and follow the instructions to send the completed version to Auralex’s Application Specialists. Within 5-7 days, Auralex will help you understand what products you need and where you should place them, with a CAD diagram to help. The application specialists will walk along side you through treating your space via phone and email support beyond the FREE Personalized Room Analysis. This free off-site acoustical analysis service will help broadcast facilities refine their acoustics.

The two most popular absorbtive materials in the Auralex line are high quality acoustical foam (Studiofoam) and acoustical fiberglass covered with specialized fabric (ELiTE ProPanels).  Acoustical foam and fabric-wrapped acoustical fiberglass panels are well-suited to alleviate excessive reverberation and other common acoustical problems in rooms not specifically designed for music recording and performance. Properly placed and chosen acoustical foam and fabric-wrapped panels can turn even the worst room into a suitable acoustic environment.

Auralex’s line of Studiofoam includes various cuts and thicknesses and 10 Auralex colors (charcoal gray, blue, plum, purple, kelly green, forest green, red, orange, burgundy and brown) to fit any décor; and to offer a solution for small, mid and large size spaces. Besides Studiofoam wall panels, Auralex offers LENRD® bass traps to put in the corners of the room to address lower frequencies. Not only do they sell boxes of LENRD bass traps and Studiofoam wall panels, they offer Roominator™ kits with a combination of both and sometimes diffusion to treat an entire room at a lower cost.  Auralex’s wide range of Studiofoam panels and bass traps offer solutions for all types of broadcast facilities.

As Auralex has become more involved in treating commercial spaces, it has developed a Class A fire-rated acoustical foam called StudiofoamPro as a low cost option for acoustical treatment in commercial spaces. StudiofoamPro is available in two sizes: 2' x 2' and 2' x 4', both 1.5" thick. It is available in charcoal gray,  features beveled edges and provides a Noise Coefficient Rating (NRC) of 0.90, which is comparable to a 1” fiberglass panel. StudiofoamPro presents a low-cost option for sound absorption in a range of broadcast applications and any other space that requires a Class A fire-rated acoustical treatment.

ELiTE ProPanels are fabric-covered, absorptive panels designed to provide an aesthetic, yet cost-effective alternative to full-blown custom installations. ELiTE ProPanels are designed to absorb excessive reverberations and diminish other acoustical anomalies, providing a more pleasing and accurate listening environment. ELiTE ProPanels have industry-leading, resin hardened edges and cover the spectrum in terms of finishes, styles and colors (ELiTE B22, B24, C24, C44 and CT45 ProPanels). ELiTE ProPanels feature maximum flame retardancy and meet the Class A fire-rating per ASTM test E84.

Akamai Unveils New Cloud Defense Solutions Designed to Protect Enterprises from Sophisticated Web Attacks

Akamai Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of cloud optimization services, unveiled a new suite of cloud defense solutions aimed at protecting companies from increasingly sophisticated and costly Web attacks. With cyber crime costing global businesses approximately one trillion dollars each year1, Akamai is introducing new capabilities for enterprises and cloud computing service providers to further solidify the perimeter defense around their network infrastructure for dynamic web sites and mission-critical business applications.

“The Akamai network saw more distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against our customers' Web sites in the fourth quarter of 2010 than in the first three quarters of the year combined,” said Tom Leighton, chief scientist and co-founder, Akamai. “Companies understand the benefits of the Cloud and continue to push business-critical data and operations there; however, the need to protect these assets from the growing frequency and sophistication of Web attacks increases dramatically as a result.”

Akamai Introduces Comprehensive DDoS Defense Architecture
A recent Forrester survey showed that 74% of surveyed companies experienced one or more DDoS attacks in the past year, with 31% of these attacks resulting in service disruption. To combat these attacks launched by botnets and other malicious clients and sources, companies need a multi-layered defense architecture that keeps attacks away from their infrastructure. Having deployed more than 84,000 servers, Akamai operates the world's largest distributed computing network and provides its customers with comprehensive cloud security services.

Akamai's new DDoS defense architecture helps customers to prepare for, monitor, manage and mitigate the impacts of malicious DDoS attacks. In addition to the Akamai network's ability to absorb large-scale attacks and offer fail-over service, Akamai's cloud-based solutions include:

  • Ability to cloak web infrastructure from the public Internet
  • IP blocking and rate limiting capabilities at the network layer
  • Web application firewalling at Layer 7 (application layer)
  • Scalable protection from Domain Name System (DNS) attacks and DNSSEC
  • Blocking of traffic by geographic region
  • Identification of suspected BOTs from real users to de-prioritize or block
  • DDoS specialists to assess infrastructure and develop a run-time attack playbook
  • 24/7 support with a response Service Level Agreement (SLA)
  • Capped exposure to bursting fees related to an attack

Akamai Adds New Protection from Layer 7 (application layer) attacks
Akamai is also announcing the bolstering of its Web Application Firewall service, which helps customers comply with Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS) and provides on-demand scalability for the detection and blocking of malicious Web application attacks such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and SQL injection style attacks. Akamai's Web Application Firewall service now offers fast IP blocking and IP rate limiting to further offload unwanted requests and bandwidth outside the data-center.

Akamai also announced today that it has begun working with Qualys, a leading provider of on-demand IT security risk and compliance solutions, to explore ways in which advanced application layer protection can be enhanced through vulnerability scans and generation of customized rules for Akamai's Web Application Firewall solution.

“It is becoming clear that in order to effectively combat cyber attacks, vendors must collaborate to build enabling technologies that can boost defenses against these threats,” said Philippe Courtot, chairman and CEO of Qualys. “We look forward to working with Akamai to explore how Qualys' security-as-as-service vulnerability scanning and threat intelligence capabilities can work with Akamai's comprehensive cloud defense initiatives.”

Audio inputs are provided for embedded digital (the de-embedder is built-in, not an optional extra) or mini-plug analog; outputs are a headphone jack (mini-plug) and tiny internal stereo speakers.

Power is provided through either the standard AC port (at 100-240 VAC) or via the four-pin XLR connection (12—24 VDC) on the back of the unit. The monitor draws about 65 Watts.

Front panel controls are nicely lit (when activated) push buttons and solid-feeling knobs. These include: input selection, aspect, markers, over/underscan, H/V sync, blue only/focus assist, phase/closed captions, waveform/vectorscope, menu, and then the standard knobs, which include: aperture, brightness, chroma, contrast, and volume.

Menu controls are extensive and what you would expect from a high-end, broadcast grade monitor. However, some of these deserve further highlighting and explication. Waveform monitor and vectorscope functions are built in and can be displayed individually, or side-by-side, with a controllable amount of transparency. The monitor also provides six channels of audio metering, with information available at various locations and in various configurations around the screen.

The LVM-173W, properly displays complex pop-up closed captioning, as well as standard 608/708 captioning. This line of monitors may be the only ones with this capability built in. The Scan button also offers access to 1:1 pixel mapping mode—a very useful feature for critical focus checks. A 2:1 magnification mode is also available.

OnStar Expands Beyond GM Cars: OnStar “Blue Button” Safety, Security and Connectivity Now Available for Most Top-Selling Vehicles on the Road Today

OnStar LogoOnStar today announced that it is responding to repeated consumer requests by offering its industry leading safety, security and connectivity services for non-GM and older GM vehicles already on the road. A standalone rearview mirror packing all of OnStar’s core technology will be available this spring through consumer electronics retailers, and is compatible with most top-selling vehicles from major manufacturers.

The OnStar retail product offers the key features that have made OnStar’s “blue button” an icon, including Automatic Crash Response, Turn-by-Turn Navigation, Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance, one-button access to emergency and roadside services, and hands-free calling, including Bluetooth connectivity.

”For years, thousands of drivers have asked us to get OnStar in vehicles that didn’t feature it as standard,” said Chris Preuss, OnStar president. “With the retail product that we’ve introduced today they certainly can. This move in to the consumer electronics space represents the biggest development in our business model since introducing OnStar as standard across all GM products several years ago.  It represents a quantum leap forward in our plans to grow our business and provide a strong new revenue base for GM and OnStar from which we can further develop our core offerings in the factory-equipped market.”

OnStar will offer the mirror in the United States through Best Buy, its first strategic retail partner, beginning in spring 2011. The product will also be available through other selected consumer electronics retailers. The mirror will be priced at $299, plus installation (expected to cost between $75 and $100). A range of service plans will be available, starting at $18.95 a month or $199 a year.

“We’re proud to be OnStar’s first strategic retail partner for this innovative offering, which is one more way Best Buy can help our customers stay connected whenever and wherever they want,”  said Lisa Farrell, senior vice president and general manager portable electronics customer solutions group at Best Buy. “We provide a one-stop solution for consumers. In addition to purchasing the device at Best Buy, we offer our customers the convenience of having it installed by our Geek Squad Auto Techs – all at one location.”

Ingram Micro will serve as the key distributor of this product and is the main contact for interested retail outlets.

Currently, the OnStar mirror is certified to work on 99 percent of the top 20 selling non-GM vehicles over the last 10 years, or approximately 55 million cars and trucks. OnStar expects to certify additional models in the months ahead.

Key features of the OnStar mirror include:

  • Automatic Crash Response. An accelerometer built into OnStar the mirror detects the sudden shock of an impact from the front, side, or rear of the vehicle and automatically calls an OnStar advisor. If the driver doesn’t respond, or responds to say there has been a crash, an OnStar advisor will direct emergency responders to the exact GPS location of the vehicle.
  • Link to Emergency Services. By pressing OnStar’s red emergency button, drivers are immediately connected to a specially trained emergency advisor for assistance in situations occurring inside or outside of their vehicle.
  • Stolen Vehicle Location Assistance. If the vehicle is reported stolen to local law enforcement, OnStar subscribers can call 1-888-4-OnStar (1-888-466-7827) from any phone. OnStar advisors, available 24/7, can attempt to locate the vehicle through the mirror’s internal GPS and provide the location to law enforcement.
  • Turn-by-Turn Navigation. With OnStar’s most popular service, drivers can press OnStar’s blue button and ask OnStar advisors for directions to a specific location or ask the advisor to find a point of interest such as a gas station or nearby restaurant. The directions are then downloaded to the OnStar system, which provides spoken turn-by-turn directions for reaching the destination.
  • Roadside Assistance. In non-emergency situations, drivers can push the blue button or call 1-888-4-ONSTAR for help with problems such as keys locked in the vehicle, a flat tire, or running out of gas.
  • Hands-Free Calling. OnStar allows drivers to make hands-free, voice-activated calls either through a Bluetooth connection to the driver’s mobile phone or through prepaid packages of minutes purchased through OnStar.

All these services are available directly through the OnStar mirror, without requiring the driver to bring along a mobile phone or even own a mobile phone. In the event of an accident, emergency services are alerted even if there is no mobile phone in the vehicle, the phone is damaged in a crash or the driver is unable to use a phone.

CES 2011: OnStar Announces Verizon Integration

OnStarOnStar today unveiled a demonstration of prototype applications for what future in-vehicle entertainment, communications and safety could look like  when taking advantage of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network.

OnStar has equipped a Buick LaCrosse research vehicle to show these applications in the Verizon Wireless booth at the show. Any future streaming video capabilities would be either available solely in the rear seat of the vehicle or only when the vehicle is in park. Among the innovative services made possible by combining the power of OnStar with the speed of 4G:

Vehicle monitoring. Cameras mounted throughout the interior and exterior of the car allow remote viewing of what is happening in and around your parked vehicle through a smartphone or PC.

Impact detection. The research vehicle has the ability to send live video to secure servers in the cloud from each of its six cameras placed around the exterior and interior of the vehicle. This is triggered by events around the car, or by an application on a smartphone. When an impact such as a parking lot fender-bender is detected, the vehicle transmits a video clip – helping to identify the offending driver.

Home monitoring and control. Keep an eye on your home by connecting to security cameras in real time through the 4Home service. Control the thermostat, lights and other home systems from your vehicle – “preset” scenes allow you to condition your home when you leave, before you return, or when you’re leaving for an extended period of time.

Electronic User’s Guide. Learn how to operate and maintain your vehicle through videos streamed on demand to the dashboard.

Video chat. Make a video call using Skype to connect with family, friends or colleagues when the vehicle is in park.

Traffic view. A voice-operated navigation system goes beyond calculating the best route by displaying live traffic-cam images from TrafficLand to spot congestion before you get stuck in a back-up.

“The true broadband speed of the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network gives our engineers the freedom to re-imagine the world of connected in-vehicle services in the future,” said OnStar President Chris Preuss. “While we haven’t decided yet which of these demonstration features OnStar will offer or when, these prototype applications show just some of what’s possible when we combine our 15 years experience in developing safe, secure and leading edge connected mobility solutions with the speed and agility of Verizon Wireless’s 4G LTE network.  Any future services from OnStar will also meet our high standards for safety – making sure that drivers’ hands are on the wheel and their eyes are on the road.”

The Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network, launched in December 2010, is the fastest, most advanced 4G network in the United States, providing speeds  up to10 times faster than Verizon Wireless’ 3G network. Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE Mobile Broadband network currently reaches one-third of all Americans, with plans to expand the network to the company’s entire 3G coverage area over the next three years.

Pioneer Enhances Sound Quality New Speaker Line-Up

Pioneer SpeakersPioneer Electronics offers consumers more ways to enjoy the in-vehicle listening experience with its new line of TS-A Series Speakers and Champion Series Subwoofers. Pioneer’s 2011 TS-A speakers feature innovative technology like carbon graphite IMPP Interlaced Aramid Fiber woofer cones, soft dome midranges, and wave guide arrays to achieve an open and smooth sound. The 2011 Champion Subwoofers feature a new IMPP Composite Seamless Cone and Dual-layer Elastic Polymer Surround for deep, powerful and controlled bass.

“It’s critical to have high quality speakers to get the best experience from the music you listen to – whether it’s at home or in the car. Pioneer’s speaker engineers go to great lengths to design our speakers so they work optimally in the automotive environment, yet remain true to the original recording and maximize the listening enjoyment,” said Ted Cardenas, director of marketing for the car electronics department, sales and marketing division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc.

TS-A Series Speakers

Pioneer’s TS-A speakers are available in five sizes: 5-1/4”, 6-1/2”, 4” x 6”, 6” x 8” and 6” x 9” to fit most vehicle applications. Each speaker is designed to provide listeners with an optimum musical experience no matter what type of music is playing. The low distortion carbon graphite IMPP Interlaced Aramid Fiber cones are extremely strong and durable, necessary for powerful bass output. The cone’s high-density internal architecture can handle high power and reduce unwanted flexing, which results in rich, linear sound.

The speakers also include a soft dome diaphragm midrange driver utilizing a wave guide enclosure. The design enables mid and high frequencies to be projected in a uniform and wide dispersion pattern, resulting in a smooth on- and off-axis response.

Other features of the TS-A speakers include:

  • Light Weight Elastic Polymer Surround
  • New Grill Design
  • Low Frequency Crossover (TS-A1304C, TS-A1604C, TS-A6994R, TS-A6984R, TS-A1684R, TS-A1674R)
  • 17% larger woofer cone piston area, while maintaining the same universal-fit 6-1/2 inch basket size (TS-A1604C, TS-A1684R)

The TS-A speaker line-up is comprised of the following models and starts at a suggested price of $80; TS-A1304C (5-1/4” component set), TS-A1604C (6-1/2” component set), TS-A6994R (6” x 9” 5-Way Coaxial), TS-A6984R (6” x 9” 4-Way Coaxial), TS-A6974 (6” x 9” 3-Way Coaxial), TS-A1684R (6-1/2” 4-Way Coaxial), TS-A1674R (6-1/2” 3-Way Coaxial), TS-A1374R (5-1/4” 3-Way Coaxial), TS-A6874 (6” x 8” 3-Way Coaxial) and TS-A4674 (4” x 6” 3-Way Coaxial)

Champion Subwoofers

Pioneer’s new Champion series subwoofers, TS-W259D4, TS-W259S4, TS-W309D4 and TS-W309S4, are redesigned for 2011 with increased sound output, providing more bass at all volume levels. Available in 10- and 12-inch models, the subwoofers feature a larger seamless IMPP composite cone with a 14 percent larger surface area than the previous generation. The larger cone is able to move more air at higher sound pressure levels without flexing or “buckling,” which can create distortion.

The newly developed cone is further reinforced by a new Dual-layer Elastic Polymer Surround that is light and flexible yet dramatically durable, resulting in a subwoofer that can reliably move significant amounts of air with ease.

Internal components of the subwoofer were also improved by using a four-layer copper voice coil with an aluminum former which improves heat dissipation for higher input power handling and increased reliability. Additionally, air vents in the metal basket construction below the spider were incorporated to help further cool the voice coil. As the speaker cone travels up and down, air moves through the vents to help dissipate heat from the voice coil.

The series will be offered in single or dual voice coils giving consumers more flexibility in their installation configurations. The dual 4 Ohm versions can be configured for 2 or 8 Ohm wiring with the speaker terminals located on one side of the speakers.

The Champion series subwoofers will be available in January for a suggested retail price of $110 and $100 for the 10-inch TS-W259D4 and TS-W259S4 and $130 and $120 for the 12-inch TS-W309D4 and TS-W309S4.
